West Norwood, S.E. London - Large Suburban Garden.
To transform a sizeable, largely neglected suburban garden, into a functional, more inviting space for children and adults alike. The most important factor was to overcome the long and thin dimensions of the garden, by introducing key soft and hard elements as a means of creating a greater sense of width, while also giving the impression of a foreshortened space.
Fortunately, there were a number of attractive well established shrubs, which either remained in their existing location, or were transplanted and used elsewhere in the design. The creation of a decked area with adjoining patio for entertainment and a raised grass hillock, partitioned by a natural stone gabion walls, made a perfect play area, where children could be observed at all times.
